New York Yankees starter Marcus Stroman received a cortisone shot in his left knee on Saturday after being placed on the 15-day injured list due to inflammation in the area.
“We’re hoping it’s not long,” manager Aaron Boone said on Sunday prior to his club’s series finale against the San Francisco Giants.
Stroman suffered the injury during Friday’s rainy affair at Yankee Stadium, where he threw 46 pitches and lasted just two-thirds of an inning. He was tagged for five runs on four hits with three walks. He went to a local hospital following the games to have tests done on the knee.
The right-hander is 0-1 in three starts this season with an 11.57 ERA.
“The hope is it’s not something too serious and that we can attack this and hopefully be a little bit of a source of maybe not having him as sharp as he needs to be,” Boone said of the injury on Saturday. “So hopefully, we can attack this and have it be something that we can benefit from and get him physically where he needs to be.”
Stroman’s struggles have come after an awkward six months with the Yankees. After demoting him to the bullpen down the stretch last year, general manager Brian Cashman tried to trade him all winter in an attempt to get his $18 million off the books.
No suitors were found, though it appeared his presence would be a saving grace after injuries sabotaged the Yankees’ rotation. Gerrit Cole is out for the season after undergoing Tommy John surgery, and Luis Gil is sidelined until June with a lat strain. Clarke Schmidt also encountered a shoulder issue, though he should return in the coming week.
It has forced the Yankees to roll with Stroman and Carlos Carrasco, another veteran righty who has struggled to the tune of a 7.71 ERA through his first three starts of the season.
“We gotta do better. We’ve struggled to this point… we’ve gotta night-in and night-out pitch a little bit better to put us in a good situation. We’ll keep working at it.”
