GOD OF WAR Live-Action Series Finds Its Freya as it Casts FOR ALL MANKIND Star Sonya Walger — GeekTyrant
The God of War live-action series at Amazon Prime Video keeps stacking its cast with serious talent, and the latest addition is one fans of prestige television are going to appreciate.
Sonya Walger, best known for her years as Penny Widmore on Lost, has been cast in the recurring role of Freya.
If you know the games, you know Freya isn’t just a supporting character. She’s one of the most layered figures in the Norse saga, and the official character description makes that clear: “a Vanir goddess and princess who practices powerful, ancient magic.
“She is also Odin’s ex-wife and the former Queen of the Valkyries in Asgard, a title bestowed upon her on her marriage day. She is strong, insightful, and filled with regrets. When Freya’s unhappy marriage to Odin ended with her being exiled, she was cut off from her family, as well as her native land, Vanaheim.
“Freya has lived alone in Midgard for a century, a recluse in a hidden glade, feared by humans, and often referred to as the Witch of the Woods.”
A century of isolation, a brutal exile, and magic she carries like a wound. This is a meaty role for the actress.
Walger joins a cast that has been coming together impressively. Ryan Hurst leads the series as Kratos, with Callum Vinson playing his young son Atreus.
The series also stars Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Max Parker as Heimdall, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, and Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka as fan-favorite brothers Brok and Sindri.
Beyond Lost, Walger has built a strong resume across genre television. She played astronaut Molly Cobb on Apple TV’s alt-history series For All Mankind and has appeared in Amazon’s Night Sky, as well as The Catch and Get Shorty.
The series picks up with the storyline from the two most recent God of War games, following Kratos and Atreus as they set out to scatter the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye.
The official logline reads: “Father and son Kratos and Atreus embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.”
That tension between the two of them, the god learning humanity and the boy learning godhood, is what made the games so great. Whether the series can carry that same emotional weight is the real question.
Ronald D. Moore serves as writer, showrunner, and executive producer through his Tall Ship Productions banner, with production already underway in Vancouver.
Frederick E.O. Toye is directing the first two episodes. The project comes with a two-season order, which signals real confidence from Amazon, and is co-produced by Sony Pictures Television, Amazon MGM Studios, PlayStation Productions, and Tall Ship.
