STAR WARS May Have Changed THE ACOLYTE’s Biggest Mystery After the Show’s Cancellation — GeekTyrant

When The Acolyte was canceled in August 2024, it became the first live-action Star Wars series to officially get the axe. That made the future of its story uncertain, especially when it came to the mysterious dark side warrior played by Manny Jacinto.

The Stranger quickly became one of the show’s most intriguing characters, and fans spent months debating whether he was truly a Sith Lord or something else entirely.

Now, Star Wars may have finally answered that question. A newly updated edition of The Secrets of the Sith by Marc Sumerak seems to reframe the Stranger’s place in Star Wars lore in a pretty major way.

The in-universe book, written from Emperor Palpatine’s perspective, directly references the events of The Acolyte and appears to confirm that the Stranger was part of an actual Sith lineage tied to Darth Plagueis.

That’s a big shift from the theories many fans had been running with. Before the show was canceled, there were strong hints that showrunner Leslye Headland intended the Stranger to evolve into the founder of the Knights of Ren.

The series included musical cues pointing in that direction, and reports surrounding the official art book added fuel to the idea. Headland and Jacinto even commented on those discussions publicly.

But this new material paints a very different picture. In the section covering the High Republic Era, Palpatine writes: “The Sith briefly made their presence known near the end of an era that the Jedi arrogantly referred to as the High Republic, but it would be another century before I would finally lead our Order out of the shadows again.”

That strongly suggests Palpatine viewed the Stranger as a legitimate Sith figure. The book digs even deeper with a recap of The Acolyte’s events:

“Before I became the final apprentice of Darth Plagueis, there was another attempted thread of Sith lineage at play. A former Padawan of Jedi Master Vernestra Rwoh in the waning days of the High Republic had embraced the dark side.

“Under a number of false identities – including that of the masked warrior simply called the Stranger – he sowed discord among the Jedi as he sought to take on a pupil of his own.

“The Stranger found an acolyte in a young girl named Mae-ho Aniseya, the child of powerful witches on Brendok. It was said that Mae and her twin sister Verosha were born from the Force itself.

“Mae sought revenge against the Jedi for her coven’s demise but had an unfortunate change of heart when she discovered that her twin had survived the culling. However, Osha – who had foolishly devoted herself to the light – wisely gave in to the dark side and took her sister’s place as the Stranger’s apprentice.”

That passage changes the conversation around the Stranger in an interesting way. Rather than setting him up as some proto-Knights of Ren figure, this version of events makes him sound like a failed apprentice operating directly under Darth Plagueis.

It also explains why Plagueis appeared to be secretly observing him during the series. If the Stranger was his apprentice, then his attempts to recruit Mae and Osha may have been part of an effort to prove himself worthy within the Sith hierarchy.

Of course, that opens another complicated issue involving the Sith Rule of Two. The most likely explanation is that the Stranger was trying to build power before eventually challenging Plagueis himself.

Mae and Osha’s origins as Force-created twins would’ve made them incredibly valuable to Plagueis, especially considering the Sith Lord’s obsession with manipulating life and the Force.

If that’s true, things clearly didn’t work out for the Stranger. Palpatine’s wording refers to this as an “attempted thread of Sith lineage,” which makes it sound like Plagueis ultimately discarded the entire experiment before eventually taking Palpatine as his apprentice.

There’s also another interesting wrinkle. Titan released an updated version of The Secrets of the Jedi alongside the Sith book, and this one includes commentary from Luke Skywalker about the same era. Luke’s understanding is far more fragmented, but he still hints at dark secrets surrounding the Jedi during the High Republic:

“Some even say that it was during this brightest of times that the Sith began to crawl their way back out of the darkness. There are even whispers that legendary Jedi like Vernestra Rwoh may have been complicit in their return. But we may never know for sure.”

That may be the final word on The Acolyte. With the series canceled, there’s a good chance many of its bigger mysteries will never fully play out onscreen. But these new reference books offer a pretty revealing glimpse at where Lucasfilm may have intended the story to go before the plug was pulled.
