William Shatner isn’t closing the door on Captain Kirk, but if Star Trek wants him back, it better come knocking with a really great idea.
William Shatner has once again addressed talk of returning as Captain James T. Kirk, saying that nostalgia alone isn’t enough to get him back in the captain’s chair. He loves the character and the franchise, but after all these years, a comeback would need to actually mean something.
Shatner addressed the latest chatter about a possible Kirk return on Instagram, apparently wanting to shut down the rumors before they gained any momentum.
“In order to put a top to the rumor mill before it starts producing even more fiction than Star Trek ever did, let me say this: If someone came up with a meaningful way to bring Captain Kirk back to life, and gave him something genuinely interesting to do that added to the beauty and spirit of Star Trek, I would be delighted to consider it. But that has never come up.”
Shatner isn’t saying no. He’s saying nobody has given him a reason to say yes. There have certainly been opportunities floating around the franchise. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds co-showrunners previously revealed that they had an idea for Shatner to appear as Kirk in an episode, though it never happened.
There’s also the rather significant problem that Shatner’s version of Kirk died in Star Trek: Generations. Of course, death has rarely been an insurmountable obstacle in Star Trek.
Star Trek: Picard even included a reference to Kirk’s remains that got fans wondering whether the franchise might eventually find a way to bring the original captain back.
Another project recreated Kirk using a stand-in and AI technology, with Shatner giving his blessing for Sam Witwer to serve as the body double. Shatner wasn’t officially involved in that appearance, but his feelings about personally returning remain consistent. If Kirk comes back, it has to be for something worthwhile.
He explained: “I love Star Trek just as much as all of you folks do. Kirk has been an extraordinary part of my life, and I would never want to bring him back simply for the sake of bringing him back. So, until someone comes knocking with an idea worthy of Kirk, I’ll wait. For them, or for eternity.”
He has a point about bringing Kirk back simply because filmmakers can. Captain Kirk is one of the most recognizable characters in science fiction, and Shatner has lived with the role for decades. If he’s going to return after Kirk received a definitive ending in Generations, he clearly wants the story to justify undoing it.
The bigger question may be where Shatner could even return. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is heading toward its final season in 2027, while Strange New Worlds has already wrapped filming on its final season. Paramount also appears focused on getting Star Trek back onto the big screen before launching another television series.
The next Star Trek movie is reportedly heading far into the franchise’s future and is expected to focus on new characters rather than familiar faces. That doesn’t exactly leave an obvious landing spot for Shatner’s Kirk.
For now, fans probably shouldn’t expect to see the 95-year-old actor suddenly materialize on a transporter pad. Shatner doesn’t sound particularly eager to chase another appearance, either. He’s willing to listen, but somebody has to walk through the door with a Captain Kirk story that earns his attention.
Until then, Shatner continues to make convention appearances and meet Star Trek fans, so there are still plenty of opportunities to see the legendary actor in person.
