Google Expands AI-Powered Virtual Try-On to More Regions


Google’s expanding access to its advanced virtual try-on tools to more regions, with shoppers in the U.K and India set to get access to The Big G’s most advanced digital cosplay technology.

Originally launched to U.S. consumers back in 2023, Google’s evolving virtual try-on process uses AI to show how chosen items look on different body types “down to the shadows, wrinkles and draping”, helping to improve the online shopping process.

Google has continued to advance its virtual try-on tech over the past year, making these depictions even more true-to-life, while also expanding the option to more clothing types.

And now, British and Indian consumers will also be able to check them out.

As per Google:

Envisioning how an outfit will look on you while shopping online can be tough, especially during the busy festive season. Now shoppers in the UK and India can virtually try billions of apparel listings on themselves, just by uploading a photo.”

Google’s latest virtual try-on models enable users to layer an image of themselves with a range of tops, bottoms, dresses, jackets and shoes, so you can get a better sense of how those items will actually look on you in real life.

“The feature is powered by our custom AI model for fashion, which understands both the human body and nuances of clothing.”

Which will never replicate actually trying on clothes in real life, but through advanced simulations, it could make the online shopping process a little better, offering more assurance that what you’re buying won’t make you look like a damn fool.

Which is always a risk, especially given the rise of cheaper fashion providers. Sometimes, some of the stuff you order from these sites is definitely not going to match up to your expectation, and it’s disappointing to go from anticipating delivery to chucking that new top into the back of your wardrobe.

Google’s AI advances should help in this, providing more accurate depictions of how you’ll look in different items.

Google says that users can tap on the “try it on” icon on apparel product listings across Google to try out the option.
