Dave Filoni’s STAR WARS Movie Hits Pause, but Would’ve United SKELETON CREW With the Mando-Verse — GeekTyrant

Dave Filoni’s long-anticipated Star Wars movie might be taking a breather, but new details make it clear the project was shaping up to be something pretty awesome for fans invested in the interconnected Disney+ era of the franchise.

The film, which was first revealed during Star Wars Celebration in 2023, is reportedly on the backburner for now. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the plan was for the movie to act as a major crossover event, pulling together characters from Skeleton Crew alongside familiar faces from The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and Ahsoka.

All roads were leading toward a shared conflict with Grand Admiral Thrawn, setting up what would’ve been a massive payoff for years of storytelling across multiple shows.

Set in the timeline between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens, The New Republic era, the untitled movie was designed to cap off the Mando-verse. Filoni spoke openly about his excitement for the project last year while juggling other responsibilities at Lucasfilm, particularly as he was deep into work on Ahsoka Season 2.

“Because I’ve been writing [Ahsoka season 2], things have clicked, and I have a much better idea about where things are going to go. I will say, I have an opening I really like quite a bit, I’m very excited about it for that picture. I’m excited about the potential of just doing it.”

Even with that enthusiasm, the movie’s timeline has clearly shifted. Filoni’s role at Lucasfilm has also evolved in a big way. Formerly the studio’s Chief Creative Officer, Dave Filoni is now serving as co-president alongside Lynwen Brennan, following Kathleen Kennedy’s exit after a 14-year run that began when Disney acquired Star Wars in 2012.

While Filoni’s crossover epic waits its turn, Lucasfilm isn’t slowing down on the theatrical side. The Mandalorian and Grogu is next up, directed by Jon Favreau and continuing the story from the hit streaming series.

After that comes Star Wars: Starfighter, an original standalone feature directed by Shawn Levy. That film introduces brand-new characters played by Ryan Gosling, Matt Smith, and Mia Goth, marking a fresh corner of the galaxy far, far away.

The Mandalorian and Grogu is set to hit theaters on May 22, with Star Wars: Starfighter following on May 28, 2027. As for Filoni’s movie, it might be on pause, but the idea of all of these Mando-verse characters uniting against Thrawn feels like something Lucasfilm won’t abandon forever.

Fans will just have to be patient a little longer.
