THE RINGS OF POWER Season 3 Is Introducing Elros, the Legendary King Behind Aragorn’s Bloodline — GeekTyrant
One of the biggest storylines heading into The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3 is the growing conflict in Númenor, and it looks like the series is about to dig even deeper into the kingdom’s origins.
That means introducing one of the most important figures in all of Tolkien’s mythology, a character whose legacy stretches all the way to Aragorn.
The upcoming season is set to tackle several major events from the Second Age, with the political turmoil in Númenor continuing to escalate. As that story unfolds, the series will also take a trip into the past to reveal more about the kingdom’s founding through the arrival of Elros.
Speaking with Empire magazine, Patrick McKay confirmed that Elrond’s twin brother will finally appear in the series. Fans won’t be meeting him in the present timeline, though.
Instead, Elros will show up in a flashback sequence exploring the early days of Númenor. Even better, Robert Aramayo, who already plays Elrond, will also take on the role of his brother.
For anyone who isn’t familiar with Tolkien’s deeper lore, Elros is one of the most significant figures in Middle-earth history. Like Elrond, he was born a Half-elven, but after the Valar offered the brothers the choice of which race they wished to belong to, Elros chose mortality while Elrond chose the immortal life of the Elves.
That decision changed the course of history. Elros became the first King of Númenor, ruled for an incredible 410 years, lived to the age of 500, and established one of the greatest kingdoms ever to exist in Middle-earth.
His importance doesn’t stop there, either. Elros is also the ancestor of Aragorn, making him the patriarch of the royal bloodline that eventually leads to the return of the King in The Lord of the Rings. It’s a connection that makes his introduction a huge moment for fans who love seeing Tolkien’s expansive mythology come together on screen.
McKay didn’t reveal exactly how the flashback fits into the larger story, but it makes perfect sense given where Númenor’s story is headed.
The island kingdom’s future becomes one of the defining events of the Second Age, and if the series continues following Tolkien’s timeline, it’s likely to remain one of the central storylines throughout Season 3 and even into Season 4.
While Aramayo will be stepping into the role of Elros for those flashback scenes, his version of Elrond will also be entering a new chapter.
The actor teased where fans will find the Elven leader when the new season begins, saying: “This season is an interesting one. Elrond’s got his own little gaff now. He’s got his own little place in Rivendell. I was really excited that the show was going to bring it in.”
Seeing Rivendell continue to take shape should be another highlight for longtime Tolkien fans, especially as it grows into one of the most iconic locations in Middle-earth. Pair that with a deeper exploration of Númenor’s legendary past and the arrival of Elros, and Season 3 looks like it’s filling in some of the biggest missing pieces of the Second Age.
