Mayor Zohran Mamdani has shed light on last week’s 911 outage in the Bronx, which resulted in hundreds of calls not going through in the pre-dawn hours of the morning.
The New York Times first reported on the Tuesday morning system break down that lasted for roughly seven hours, from around 3 a.m. until 10 a.m.
Officials have said many of the 911 calls made throughout the morning outage managed to get rerouted to additional call centers, but several hundred callers were not able to connect with an operator.
“We are now taking steps to ensure that that never happens again,” Mamdani said, who blamed the outage on “an early morning software update by Motorola.”
The mayor, who was in upstate New York on a weeklong vacation, was asked by multiple reporters about the city’s response time and messaging during an unrelated press conference on Monday.
“What we found is that a significant number of the calls that were coming in over the course of that period of time were being rerouted to another part of the 911 system,” Mamdani said. “As it was going through the day, the work was being done to do everything we could to reach out to New Yorkers directly to ensure we could provide them with whatever service was necessary.”
Motorola did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
