In first place we have Emma D’Arcy as Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen on House of the Dragon.
Emma D’Arcy delivers a remarkably controlled and layered performance as Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen in House of the Dragon Season 3, Episode 3, capturing the growing weight of the crown through subtle expressions, weary silences and flashes of restrained frustration. Rather than portraying Rhaenyra’s position as a triumph, D’Arcy shows a queen increasingly overwhelmed by the political, personal and emotional demands of ruling. Their ability to communicate exhaustion, grief, anger and uncertainty with little more than a look or change in posture is particularly impressive, while moments of dry humour make Rhaenyra feel unexpectedly human. Most importantly, D’Arcy subtly suggests that power is beginning to change her: compassion remains, but impatience and hardness are emerging beneath the surface. It is a nuanced, quietly powerful performance that makes Rhaenyra’s struggle between the person she is and the ruler she may need to become completely convincing.
In second place we have Olivia Cooke as Queen Alicent Hightower on House of the Dragon.
Olivia Cooke delivers a deeply affecting performance as Queen Alicent Hightower in House of the Dragon Season 3, Episode 5, portraying a woman whose former power and certainty have given way to vulnerability, regret and an increasingly painful awareness of the consequences of her choices. Cooke excels in the quieter moments, using subtle changes in expression, hesitant glances and controlled emotion to reveal everything Alicent cannot bring herself to say aloud. There is a palpable sense of exhaustion in her performance, but also resilience: Alicent may have lost much of the authority she once possessed, yet she remains observant, intelligent and emotionally guarded. Cooke is particularly effective at showing the contradictions within Alicent—her love for her children alongside her recognition of what they have become, her lingering resentment toward Rhaenyra alongside their complicated emotional bond, and her desire for peace despite her own role in creating the conflict. It is a restrained, mature and emotionally complex performance that continues to make Alicent one of the series’ most fascinating characters.
In third place we have Phia Saban as Queen Helaena Targaryen on House of the Dragon.
Phia Saban gives a haunting and beautifully understated performance as Queen Helaena Targaryen in House of the Dragon Season 3, Episode 5, once again making the character’s quietness far more powerful than any dramatic speech. Saban conveys Helaena’s grief, isolation and unusual understanding of the world through delicate facial expressions, distant looks and carefully measured dialogue, creating the impression that she often sees and understands far more than those around her realise. There is a fragile quality to Helaena, but Saban never allows that fragility to become weakness; instead, there is an eerie calm and growing sense of inner strength beneath her sadness. Her ability to make even the smallest reaction feel significant gives Helaena an almost otherworldly presence, while still keeping her deeply human. It is a subtle, moving performance that proves Saban can command attention without ever needing to raise her voice.
