X has launched a new number code option for its updated X Chat messaging element, which gives users another way to facilitate message connection without sharing their phone numbers or personal details.
As shown in this screenshot, posted by @XFreeze on X, this new phone number-like option lets X Chat users generate a unique 10-digit X number, which they’ll be able to share in order to allow DMs with non-connections.
Whch, by extension, will also enable those users to make audio and video calls.
Profile visitors who are not mutual followers, but who are seeking to contact a user via DM, will be prompted to enter that profile’s X number to enable DM access, adding another security element to X Chat messaging.
Users will also be able to refresh their X number to update the code, enabling ongoing control over who can message them.
The code access option provides another way to utilize X’s updated DM system, by enabling expanded messaging access to non-followers. X Chat lets users send DMs to accounts that follow them, while users can also set their message settings to enable messages from anyone if they choose.
Having a security code option will provide another access gate, so that users can enable messages from an expanded selection of people. That could be good for inviting, say, event attendees to send a message for a limited time after an event.
It may also enable a level of exclusivity for specific moments or activations. Celebrities, for example, could open up their DMs to selected fans by sharing a code, which they could then deactivate after a period.
It’s another consideration for expanded X Chat usage, facilitating more types of connection options.
The new X number option is in the process of being rolled out to users.
