Weekend Guide: Dyker Heights Light Show, Stand-Up, and the Circus

Thanksgiving is here, and Brooklyn’s going all in on the holiday season.

Beginning Friday, you can experience the 2024 Dyker Heights Christmas light displays. For more holiday cheer, head to Dumbo for ice skating at Roebling Rink and seasonal markets. Or shop local at the Makers Show Holiday Market at City Point on Saturday, with over 60 vendors and activities on site.

If you’re in the mood for a laugh, enjoy the Prime-Time Comedy show at Eastville Comedy Club on Saturday night, hosted by Janeane Garofalo. Also on Saturday night, you can immerse yourself in the sounds of Studio Ghibli in concert at the Red Pavilion, featuring a fresh twist on beloved Ghibli compositions. 

One last thing: If you have unused fresh and canned food from Thanksgiving, consider donating it to the St. Nick Fridge in Bushwick—a year-round community-run initiative. Your donations will support families in need. Drop off your items anytime at 176 St. Nicholas Ave.

Friday, November 29

Dyker Heights Christmas light tours
Ongoing through Dec. 30

During the holiday season, Dyker Heights is transformed into a dazzling display of Christmas magic, with vibrant lights, towering Santas, festive sleighs, snowmen, and Christmas carols. You can explore the neighborhood on foot, by bus, or even by limo. 11th to 13th Avenues (Dyker Heights Boulevard) from 83rd to 86th Street.

Holidays in Dumbo
Various dates and times 

Celebrate the season in Dumbo with holiday projections, ice skating at Roebling Rink (starting Nov. 25), and festive markets like the Brooklyn Flea and FAD Market. On Dec. 7, shop local art at the Studios event, then join the Annual Tree Lighting & Bar Crawl on Dec. 11 with live music and Santa photos.

Mahogany Mommies Brooklyn Pop-Up Shop
10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Skip the mall madness this Black Friday and join Mahogany Mommies to celebrate community, culture, and creativity at their Black Friday pop-up. Enjoy a day of local shopping, delicious food, and music. Whether you’re holiday shopping or just out for a good time, this event has something for everyone. 1308 Myrtle Ave. Free.

Post Turkey Day Walking Tour
1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

After the Thanksgiving feast, take a break on Friday with a peaceful walking tour of Green-Wood Cemetery. Dress warmly, and explore one of Brooklyn’s most beautiful and historic green spaces this late autumn. Enter at the Gothic Arch near the Main Entrance at 5th Avenue and 25th Street (500 25th St.). The Story So Far at Brooklyn Paramount
6:30 p.m.

California’s the Story so Far comes to Brooklyn Paramount on Friday to celebrate their new album, I Want to Disappear. Known for their emotionally charged sound, the band will play new tracks and fan favorites like “Quicksand.” They’ll be joined by Superheaven and Koyo. 385 Flatbush Ave. Ext. Tickets start at $59.

Jerrod Carmichael at the Bell House
10 p.m.

Catch the Emmy-winning comedian, currently starring in HBO’s Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show, as he brings his laid-back yet sharp stand-up to the Bell House. Tickets are selling fast. 149 Seventh Street. Tickets are $29.78.

The Makers Show Holiday Market at City Point
Nov. 30 to Dec. 22

Do your holiday shopping at the Makers Show Holiday Market at City Point, featuring over 60 local vendors. Expect family-friendly dance parties and workshops. Annual Turkey Day Battle 2024

Get ready for the Annual Turkey Day Battle at Uncommon Charter High School, where step teams, hip-hop teams, drumlines, and majorette teams will compete for the 2024 Turkey Day Battle Winner title. Bed-Stuy’s Winter Wonderland Market
12 p.m. to 6 p.m., Thursdays through Sundays until Dec. 22

Bed-Stuy’s Winter Wonderland Market is back, bringing a month of shopping, live entertainment, fashion showcases, and tunes from local DJs. Kicking off on Small Business Saturday, this year’s market is all about supporting the community. 1368 Fulton Street.

Holiday puppet show
12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays through Dec. 30

A Park Slope holiday tradition returns with The Steadfast Tin Soldier at PuppetWorks. This charming performance tells the story of a one-legged toy soldier who falls in love with a paper ballerina. Their second show, Nutcracker Sweets, is based on E.T.A. Hoffmann’s The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, the inspiration behind The Nutcracker ballet. Studio Ghibli Jazz w/ V.OLIN
