Brooklyn stabbing suspect accused of killing woman who spurned his advances caught at Newark Airport: cops
Authorities say 25-year-old Deandre Creary of the Bronx stands accused of fatally assaulting his ex at a late-night barbecue inside Lincoln Terrace Park on Aug. 18 after she spurned his sexual advances.
Creary was arrested by Port Authority Police Department officers at Newark Liberty Airport in New Jersey early Monday morning after an alert was sent out warning officers to keep their eyes out for him. He was then taken to the 77th Precinct in Brooklyn on Sept. 8 for booking on charges of murder, endangering the welfare of a child, and criminal possession of a weapon.
On Tuesday afternoon, detectives marched Creary out of the stationhouse in handcuffs to transfer him to central booking and arraignment.
Creary was one of well over a dozen people who gathered in the park at around 5 p.m. on Aug. 18, and things grew tense as the night went on. According to NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said the suspect repeatedly demanded sex from the victim, 30-year-old Shakeema Davis, only to be denied each time. That sent Creary into a jealous and deadly rage.
“Everybody’s hanging out, drinking, smoking, listening to music. Our eventual stabber keeps soliciting our victim for sex. She keeps saying no,” Chief Kenny explained, sharing that the advances soon turned into a full blown argument after she threw a drink at him and he launched an attack. “She actually picks up the barbecue in an attempt to get him away from her and strikes him with the barbecue. Once he’s struck with the barbecue, he pulls out a knife and stabs her three times.”
Davis suffered stab wounds to her body and head, a vicious attack that was not only witnessed by others at the party but also her young 7-year-old son. Good samaritans reportedly attempted to step in and restrain the stabber but he swiped at them with the knife and made his escape.
Meanwhile, EMS rushed Davis to Brookdale University Hospital but she could not be saved and was pronounced dead.
Chief Kenny added that Davis had invited Creary to the barbecue by Davis, unaware that it would be a fatal mistake.
“We believe the stabber and the victim did have a prior relationship, which is why he was invited to the party,” Kenny said, “which is why he was consistently basically annoying her for sex.”
Before his arrest, investigators were able to identify the car used by Creary to flee the scene, allowing them to identify him as a person of interest.
