Paul Bettany Teases “Big Swings” and a Personal Story in Marvel’s VISIONQUEST — GeekTyrant

Marvel Studios is getting ready to bring Vision back into the spotlight, and it sounds like the upcoming Disney+ series VisionQuest is aiming to do something a little different with the beloved android Avenger.
Paul Bettany recently opened up about the direction of the show and hinted that the creative team is taking some big creative risks as Vision begins a new chapter in the MCU.
Fans last saw Vision in WandaVision, but the version that survived the series finale was the reconstructed White Vision. That moment left plenty of questions hanging in the air about where the character would go next.
VisionQuest will finally pick up that thread as Vision continues his journey and tries to understand who he really is.
Bettany recently spoke with ScreenRant about working with showrunner Terry Matalas and how they approached the character for the series. According to the actor, the show leans into the kind of storytelling that Marvel fans tend to embrace when the studio swings for something bigger and a little unexpected.
“I think that Terry realized, and agreed with me, that I feel like Marvel gets rewarded when it takes really big swings. And I think that he just understood in his bones who Vision is.
“And Vision is for the kid that I was when I was a kid — the kid that felt like an outsider and felt like they had no community that they fit into. And he knew who these stories are for and who Vision is for.
“And I think we made a really fun and entertaining show about a guy who’s an outsider and trying to find out who he is.”
Since his introduction in Avengers: Age of Ultron, the character has always stood slightly apart from everyone else. He’s incredibly powerful, philosophical, and often trying to understand humanity while technically not being human himself.
If VisionQuest leans into that identity struggle, it could make for a compelling character-driven Marvel story.
One of the most exciting parts of the series is the return of James Spader as Ultron. The villainous AI has been absent from the MCU since Age of Ultron, and his connection to Vision makes his return especially interesting. Bettany and Matalas have both expressed how much fun it was bringing the two characters back together on screen.
Matalas shared his excitement for the project and what fans can expect from the dynamic between Bettany and Spader:
“I’m so very proud of what we did. I would have to say, if you’re a fan of Paul Bettany and James Spader, [VisionQuest] is a delivery system for those two.
“It’s one of my most favorite things, even in post. It’s so delicious to watch these two cut it up. I’m very proud of it and can’t wait for you to see it.”
Hearing that Vision and Ultron will share significant screen time is cool. Their relationship is complicated, to say the least. Ultron created Vision’s body, and the two represent very different views of humanity and evolution. Watching them clash again could end up being one of the highlights of the show.
The series also features a strong supporting cast including Todd Stashwick, Ruaridh Mollica, T’Nia Miller, Emily Hampshire, Orla Brady, Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer, James D’Arcy, Faran Tahir, Lauren Morais, Diane Morgan, and Mary McDonnell.
Marvel hasn’t revealed too many story details yet, but between Bettany’s comments about taking big creative risks and the return of Ultron, VisionQuest sounds like it could be one of the more interesting MCU projects heading to Disney+.
VisionQuest is currently expected to premiere on Disney+ in 2026.
