NYPD – NBC New York

A man was shot and killed by police after allegedly slashing an officer in the face with a 14-inch butcher knife at a Brooklyn precinct.

The NYPD said the wounded officer was first approached around 5:30 a.m. Sunday in the rear of the 73rd Precinct off East New York Avenue in Brownsville.

According to Chief of Patrol Philip Rivera, the man had initially tried to enter the precinct building through a locked door at the front before heading around to the back. He managed to make his way in through a back door and was confronted by a female officer.

“He then took out a large butcher knife and began attacking the officer. He slashed her in the face but then she was able to fight him off,” Rivera said at a press conference, describing the overnight encounter.

Officers chased after the man to the area of Park Place and Saratoga Avenue, where he was allegedly still armed with the blade. Rivera said he repeatedly refused orders from the officers to drop the knife.

“He lunged at an officer with a knife extended towards that officer. Several officers discharged their firearms and the male was struck numerous times,” Rivera said.

The man was rushed to the hospital where he was ultimately pronounced dead. His identity and age were not initially provided by officials.
