Subway, bus, and commuter rail riders should prepare for Labor Day weekend service tweaks: MTA

As Labor Day approaches, the MTA on Wednesday advised transit riders to prepare for service shakeups over the coming three-day weekend.
For subway riders, the most notable change is that the system will run on a Sunday schedule on Labor Day itself — Monday, Sept. 7, the MTA said. There will also be other subway service adjustments throughout the weekend, so the transit agency is advising straphangers to check the MTA website, mta.info, before traveling on the rails.
Buses will also adopt a Sunday schedule on Labor Day, according to the agency. The change is important for riders to track as some bus routes do not operate at all or do not travel select stretches of their routes during certain times on Sundays.
The MTA’s Access-A-Ride paratransit service will operate normally throughout the holiday weekend, according to the agency.
Labor Day getaway plans for commuter rail
On the Long Island Rail Road, riders can expect a Saturday schedule on both Saturday, Sept. 5, and Sunday, Sept. 6, the MTA said.
On Monday, Sept. 7, the LIRR will run weekend/holiday service, except for Montauk Branch trains, which will use a Sunday schedule.
Additionally, the MTA announced that the 5:13 p.m. train that provides a one-seat ride from Penn Station to Montalk, which has up until now only run during the height of summer, will begin year-round service starting Tuesday, Sept. 8.
When it comes to Metro-North Railroad, the system’s East of Hudson lines will run more getaway trains — those that normally run later in rush hour but are moved into the 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. range — on Friday, Sept. 4.
The East of Hudson trains will also follow a Sunday Schedule on Labor as well as Sunday, Sept. 6, according to the MTA. They will have regular Saturday service on Sept. 5.
