James Cameron Reveals the One Condition That Brought Linda Hamilton Back for TERMINATOR 2 — GeekTyrant

The movie feels inevitable today, but according to James Cameron, none of it would have happened if Hamilton hadn’t agreed to return. As it turns out, she had one very specific request before signing on.
During a recent conversation with Vanity Fair, Cameron walked through his entire career and shared new stories from every film he has made.
The Terminator 2 segment is packed with great details, including the moment he realized the sequel couldn’t move forward until he spoke with Hamilton directly. Cameron said:
“I really wanted Linda in the film. And I said [to the producers], ‘Have you approached her?’ ‘No.’ I said, ‘All right, well, let me approach her, because I need to know if she’s in or out before I can even write a script…’
“So I went to Linda… we had dinner. She was pregnant at the time. I said, ‘All right, we’re gonna make a Terminator movie.’ She said, ‘I have one thing that I want.’ And I said, ‘Okay.’ ‘I wanna be crazy.’”
That was the key. Hamilton wasn’t interested in returning unless Sarah Connor reflected the trauma she had lived through, but Cameron explained that they shaped her condition into something a bit more nuanced.
“Her hypothesis was that what she had been through traumatically, her vision of the future, had basically driven her nuts. We eventually modified that so that she was on the edge.
“She wasn’t really crazy, but we don’t know until partway through the film, where she goes to shoot the guy and try to unwind the future, and she can’t do it.
“So her moral compass is still intact, no matter that, in that moment, she knows she might be consigning four billion people to their deaths. So we worked together collaboratively.”
That balance is part of what makes Sarah Connor one of the most compelling characters in sci-fi. She’s hardened and intense, but still human enough to hesitate at the moment that matters most.
